چکیده

A new spectral closure model of stably stratified turbulence is used to develop a K model suitable for applications to the atmospheric boundary layer. This K model utilizes vertical viscosity and diffusivity obtained from the spectral theory. In the equation, the Coriolis parameter-dependent formulation of the coefficient C1 suggested by Detering and Etling is generalized to include the dependence on the Brunt-Väisälä frequency, N. The new K model is tested in simulations of the ABL over sea ice and compared with observations from BASE as simulated in large-eddy simulations by Kosovic and Curry, and observations from SHEBA.

Simulation of entrainment near a density stratified layer: Laboratory experiment and LIDAR observation

In this paper a simple qualitative model of the growth of a mixed layer adjacent to a uniform layer with a stably stratified layer is presented. The depth variations of mixed layer can be estimated from direct measurements. The Entrainment of a stably stratified layer into a turbulent mixed layer in a confined region was studied in laboratory for different Richardson numbers. The internal waves...

Large-eddy simulation of turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubes submerged in an emulated atmospheric boundary-layer

Turbulent flow over an array of wall-mounted cubic obstacles has been numerically investigated using large-eddy simulation. The simulations have been performed using high-performance computations with local cluster systems. The array of cubes are fully submerged in a simulated deep rough-wall atmospheric boundary-layer with high turbulence intensity characteristics of environmental turbulent fl...

Representing intermittency in turbulent fluxes: An application to the stable atmospheric boundary layer

A new formulation for eddy diffusivity is derived from Taylor’s statistical theory on turbulence and from a generalized turbulent spectral equation for energy in the inertial subrange. The latter aspect is taken into account for considering the intermittency phenomenon within turbulence model. The approach is used for a stable atmospheric boundary layer parameterization. r 2005 Elsevier B.V. Al...

A Lagrangian Stochastic Model for Heavy Particle Dispersion in the Atmospheric Marine Boundary Layer

The dispersion of heavy particles and pollutants is often simulated with Lagrangian stochastic (LS) models. Although these models have been employed successfully over land, the free surface at the air-sea interface complicates the implementation of traditional LS models. We present an adaptation of traditional LS models to the atmospheric marine boundary layer (MBL), where the bottom boundary i...

Report of a Physical Oceanography Research Project over the Southern Continental Shelf of the Caspian Sea

Abstract The study presents monthly variations of seawater properties, monitoring water column stability and stratification over the southern shelf of the Caspian Sea which depends on collecting data. Field measurements were carried out during 13 cruises along the southern boundary of the sea. Spatial and temporal distributions of temperature, salinity and density were investigated. Monthl...
